CLASS A

Class A motor homes are the big ones. These are typically large, bus like vehicles with vertical or gently sloping front windshields. Despite being the largest recreational vehicle class available, you still don’t need a commercial driver’s license.

 (look below info
about special driver license)

CLASS C

Class C RVs are somewhere between Class A and Class B. They are often built on a truck or van chassis thar is specifically designed for a motor home. They have an attached cab and most have an overhang that extends over the cab. This area is usually used as sleeping quarters but may also be used for storage.

CLASS B

The Class B Motorhomes are a really happy medium between a Class A Motorhome and a towable trailer or pop up camper. They are often called conversion vans or camper vans because they are basically just a passenger van that has been outfitted for full-time travel.

TRAVEL TRAILER

Travel trailers are the most popular type of non-motorized RV. No doubt you’ve seen one pulled down the highway hitched to a car or pickup. Travel trailers come in all sizes including tiny jellybean-shaped models with a chuckwagon kitchen in the rear to the massive house-on-wheels with picture windows and a sliding glass patio door.

5TH WHEEL

The fifth wheel got its name from its original design. They were initially invented for horse-drawn carriages in the mid 1850s. Manufacturers (who at the time built the components by hand) placed a horizontal wheel on the cargo frame or “truck” that allowed the front axle to pivot on its own.

TEARDROP

A Teardrop is a compact travel trailer consisting of a sleeping cabin and a kitchen compartment. The Camp-Inn is styled after teardrop travel trailers from the 1930’s and 1940’s. A Teardrop gets its name from its unique streamlined shape. Teardrops were popular in the 1930-40’s and have recently been regaining popularity.

One more amazing stuff:
the camper!

In North America the term truck camper and its derived acronym TC,
are generally used to refer to any recreational vehicle or RV
that may be carried in the bed of a pickup truck.
In North America, this RV type is sometimes known as
a slide-in or cab-over.

for the last...
the fancy schmancy!

Airstream is an American brand of travel trailers (“caravans” in British English) which are easily recognized by the distinctive shape of their rounded and polished aluminum coachwork.
Airstream trailers and recreational vehicles are manufactured in Jackson Center, Ohio, USA.

Registering your RV

Registering an RV is different than a car. In part, that’s because each state has their own criteria. Most states consider:

  • Age
  • Weight and/or length
  • Market value

You also may need to consider smog checks. RVs need them, too. Have a smog check every two years or you may find yourself unable to register.
Yes, you can fix that by paying for the adequate repairs.

Most DMVs have online registration calculators for RVs. Check your owner’s manual for specs.

Special Driver license?

This is a tricky question. The answer is no, you don’t need a special license with most RVs—most of the time. But, you will need a special license for an RV in some states and if the RV exceeds some limits. If you’re buying, consider these requirements beforehand. Most RVs don’t exceed weight and length limits. Inquire with your state DMV about licensing. Also, plan your out-of-state trips ahead of time to check requirements.

  • Depending on the state you are in (or passing through)
  • RVs over 26,000 pounds
  • You’ll need a commercial drivers license (CDL) in: Connecticut, Hawaii, Kansas, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, Indiana, and Wisconsin
  • Check with your state if length is a factor

States that require
a special RV driver license:

  • California
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • North Carolina
  • New Mexico
  • Nevada
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas
  • Washington DC
  • Wyoming
